Blood: the Last Vampire

I was walking around Software Etc. (Babbages) one day with the express desire to waste money on anime so I didn’t have to do homework.  The first thing I grabbed was Endless Waltz (blah) and then I saw this black dvd case sittin’ there.  I picked it up and saw that, from what I could tell, it was about vampires.  I’d never heard anything about this anime and I figured it was probably some crappy crap thing, but I bought it because I had nothing better to do and it said it was made by the creators of Ghost in the Shell.  When I finally cranked it up and watched it, I was very happy.

This takes place days before the breakout of the Vietnam War and the general premise is that there is a vampire, who is believed to be the last original vampire, working with a ‘Men in Black’ type organization from the US government who hunts down other vampires.

Let’s talk about the animation, holy shit…  The regular animation is amazing and it is blended with the CGI animation even better than was done in Macross Plus.  On top of that, the animators made the people look like people would, used realistic coloring and gave the whole movie a very dark look by in doing this.  I can only say that I wish more anime did this, at the very least using realistic colors (coughcoughKITEcough).

The music is VERY well done, as are the sound effects.  Also, something that was a nice touch, the Japanese people spoke Japanese and the Americans spoke English, with subtitles appearing for one of the languages depending on how you have it set.  I also liked how they handled the vampires.  In my opinion, they made the idea of vampires more believable in this movie, for example, Saya ( I think that’s how it goes), the main vampire, doesn’t go nuts and start burning when someone shows her the cross, she just gets pissed off.

Genre - action/horror

Animation - I'm pretty close to saying it's the best I've ever seen, wonderful artwork, excellent animation blened flawlessly with CGI and a very dark atmosphere with everything looking realistic

Sub vs. Dub - since this is one of those movies that has the Japanese people speaking Japanese and Americans Speaking English, with subtitles going to those who need it depending on the settings, I'd have to say that, as a whole, it's excellent

the Good - everything except the length

the Bad - too damn short!

Overall - I love this movie
