I had high hopes for this show before I watched it.
Of course, much of that optimism came from the fact that they had the
Serpent Custom in there, but… All
right, the general premise of the show is that some little girl is trying to
start a war and all the gundam pilots have to get back together and explode bad
guys again. First of all, let me say that I am fucking sick and tired of
anime that takes 12 year olds and puts them in places of power or makes them the
improbable heroes! AND THAT’S ALL
THAT THE GUNDAM SERIES DOES! Anyway,
let’s take a look at this show.
The animation is quite nice and was obviously what
was concentrated on most in this OVA/movie, which means that aside from the
animation, there wasn’t much difference from Gundam Wing.
The music and sound effects also seemed to be pretty close to Gundam
Wing, so whoopty do there.
Now, let me get into the crazy fighting, which is
the place I have the biggest problem with.
It seems that any mobile suit the gundam pilots get into suddenly become
400% better than it was when anyone else was in it.
There was a scene in the movie where two of the pilots where fighting,
one in a gundam and one in a mobile suit. While
I know the argument could be made that piloting skill could have been a factor,
it was apparent that the mobile suit was almost as good as the gundam because it
stood toe to toe with the gundam and took hits that would normally have made
this suit explode with anyone else piloting it, but it just kept going. Another thing is that the gundam pilots, when in their
gundams, are pretty much invincible. At
the end of the show, they have something like 4 or 5 gundams, that thing Zechs
pilots, which is pretty much a gundam and somebody else in a mobile suit against
at least 150 Serpent Customs. All
the good guys did was stand there and absorb shot after shot from the Serpent
Customs to no effect, while the SC’s were very easily destroyed, usually in
groups of at least three at a time, by the good guys.
Not only that, but the good guys were complaining that they were fighting
a losing battle, even though it was obvious that they could not be hurt by the
SC’s.
I had hoped that this would have been corrected
from Gundam Wing, but I was very disappointed.
Of course, I have been watching the 08th MS Team on Cartoon
Network and have to say that I’m very happy with that show.
Not only do they actually use tactics, but they’re mobile suits are NOT
invincible and the bad guy’s Zakus are a good match for them, not exploding
spontaneously after a few shots and all. Plus,
the animation is very nice and it is noted that people are not comfortable
following young leaders. If
you’re gonna watch a Gundam series that actually makes sense, making it the 08th
MS Team!

everything is the same as Gundam Wing, gundam pilots can make their gundams move
around like crazy gymnasts if they want, other stuff...
Overall
- Severely disappointing to me, but of course, I was looking for more than
pretty animation
