Yes… I have never, EVER, seen a show this fucked up. I have never,
EVER, enjoyed a show so much that after watching 26 episodes, it only seemed
like I’d watched about 13. I have never, EVER, seen an episode of ANY show as
fucked up as the 26th episode, which is sort of not really even a
part of the series, even though it sort of is, considering how Excel Saga
works… It’s hard to explain and as I think about it, I just start making
confused facial expressions.

The basic story is that an organization known as Across is trying to take
over the city, for the good of the people. Unfortunately, there seem to be only
three members, the leader Il Parazo or Parazzo (I doubt this is his name, but
it’s what the subtitles told me it was for most of the show), Excel and Hyatt.
The organization never gets very far since Excel is pretty much insane and Hyatt
is constantly dieing. Of course, the last few episodes kinda sorta… yeah…
The animation is quite good for a television series and the artwork is
also quite good. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the show.
Do not try to make sense of the show, you will lose your mind. I managed
to hold onto my sanity until the last episode, which destroyed my psyche with
it’s complete and utter wrongness. Also, there is no real conclusion to the
series, unless you consider the world being flooded with blood from a nosebleed
a solid ending… wait, that’s not the end, I remember now, and I won’t tell
you what it is, but I will say it makes less sense than the blood thing. Let me
give you an example of the insanity, and this may ruin parts of one episode a
little, but you’ll live, it’s important I explain the insanity. During one
episode where Hyatt and Excel have been ordered to pose as school teachers in an
effort to further the plan of conquest, they are asked by the baseball coach to
take over the team and train them to win. He can’t do this because he has an
anal disease caused by using magazines to wipe his ass instead of toilet paper.
The team doesn’t want to train, but is convinced to by Hyatt when she drinks a
glass of tomato juice. They train the team and go off to face the rival team,
which turns out to be a bunch of monkeys… Also, Excel dies 3 or so times
during the first episode, Hyatt dies countless times during the whole series,
and many others die, only to be brought back to life by the will of the
universe, which is just a starry void with arms. The director of the anime and
the author of the manga are also present, and have frequent arguments about what
should be done with the show.
What is nice to see is that, not only does Excel Saga do numerous
parodies of old anime, but they also parody anime as recent as Cowboy Bebop and
Trigun. The only problem I had with the show was not even the show’s fault,
but the fault of whomever fansubbed the show. The first 3 episodes were fine,
but then things started going wrong. For the episodes 4 – 11 or so, the
subtitles either appeared around a minute before the line was said or a minute
after the line was said. Then it switched to having the subtitles appear while
someone else was talking. For example, if one person said “hi” and the next
person said “money pants”, the subtitles saying MONKEY PANTS would show up
while the guy was saying “hi” and then whatever would be said after the guy
would say “monkey pants” would show up as he said MONKEY PANTS. This made it
so I was not really surprised by anything that happened, since I was being told
what was going on before it actually happened, and it ruined A LOT of the humor
of these episodes and was really annoying, since I had to try to match up what
they had said with what they were saying, but it got better after around 11 and
I enjoyed the rest of the show.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, probably so you don't get bored with constant
pointless insanity, almost every episode has a different theme, from being an
action movie to a pretty girl or super hero anime.
Yes, this show is fucking hilarious, has some very interesting and highly
fun characters, no real point, good animation, it’s fucking hilarious, has
some real good parodies (many of which don’t try to make themselves obvious),
and it’s fucking hilarious. Get this show and watch it right fucking now, but
I warn you, beware the 26th episode… seriously…
Genre
- you name it, Excel Saga has it
Animation
- the animation was quite good, and the artwork was equal parts realistic and
interesting
Sub
vs. Dub - I've only seen the fansub, and from that, I doubt the dub
would/will be any good, it'd be too hard to make
the
Good - everything
the
Bad - the 26th episode caused me to lose my mind
Overall -
YOU... MUST... WATCH... THIS...
(26 episodes)
