First of all, let me say this. Fushigi
Yugi might have actually gotten a higher rating from me if it weren’t for a
certain something that this show liked to do.
That something was to create romantic trouble where none was required.
For instance, the main character and the quasi main character are in
love, but every other episode, one of them decides to run away from the other
one to prevent some type of trouble, even though the last time they did this and
got back together, they promised that they would never do it again.
As I said, this happens about every other episode, for about 40 fucking
episodes! It got really annoying
after awhile.
Aside from that, if you need a quick and dirty explanation of the show,
it’s about two girls who find a book that transports them into another world
while someone else in their world reads through the book, detailing their
adventures. If you want a detailed
explanation, too fucking back, go read a different review, I ain’t making any
money here.
The animation quality was better than I expected, especially concerning
fight scenes. Let’s say the
animation was better than Shinesman. The
artwork was very spiffy, and the show had some cool lookin’ characters.
On that note, I’d like to say that the old anime like Fushigi Yugi and
Yu Yu Hakusho sure know how to make some kick ass characters. I mean, there were a few characters I didn’t care for, but
I still didn’t really dislike them. And
the guys I did like just kicked ass. Since
I can’t remember their names and I’m too lazy to look them up (I watched
this show about three months ago and haven’t thought about it much since),
I’ll just generalize the characters I really liked in the GOOD section.
Another thing that needs to be mentioned about this show is that EVERYONE
LOVES EVERYONE. If you miss an
episode or two, you’re likely to have missed about 3 new love triangles that
just sprouted up. But yeah, aside
from the over drama between the two main-ish characters and how most of the
characters fall in love with each other, this show has excellent action, great
pacing, it’s not afraid to kill off main characters, great characters, a good
story that you can’t really predict, good animation and artwork and a whole
bunch of other stuff.
Oh yeah, I was walking away from my ‘puter when I remembered something
about the show, it’s damned funny! The
people who made Fushigi Yugi weren’t afraid to put humor all over a serious
plotted show, even when the humor is really silly.
For instance, one of the main characters has the ability to change shape,
so he disguises himself as the main bad guy and walks around.
But then he’s spotted behind the main bad guy and he screams, changing
into a super deformed main bad guy, and runs off.
The guards then chase after him, yelling, “Quick, after the super
deformed commander!” Stuff like
that, let’s just say that I laughed my ass off at this show a lot..
Genre
- adventure/action/comedy/drama/romance
Animation
- a lot better than I was expecting. for how old this show is,
they had smooth animation and excellent artwork
Sub
vs. Dub - I've only seen the show fansubbed
the
Good - good animation, good action, excellent characters, good story
that is pretty unpredictable, the killing of main characters, great comedy,
etc...
the
Bad - super drama between the two main loves of the show who can't
decide whether they should run away from each other to save the other's life or
stay together forever, some other things I can't really think of now...
Overall
- probably the best love story I've ever seen... maybe... as it was said in
a review of this show at Lord Carnage's, it's got fencing, fighting, sports,
true love.... If you don't get that reference, then you may need to re-evaluate
