Geobreeders

Yep, it finally happened, I bought Geobreeders.  Ever since Schuster, Josh and I went to Best Buy and I drooled over all the anime there (I ended up buying Ninja Scroll), I was pretty sure I would either get this or Ninja Cadets sooner or later.  Lucky me, even though there aren't any ninjas in Geobreeders, there is Kung-Fu action and at least one ninja reference, so it all evens out.

Anyway, since I had got promoted to Specialist, had a Guard weekend, sold my Bubblegum Crisis DVD's and got my paycheck from work, I decided that I had to get rid of some cash quick or it'd seem like I'm actually making money, so I ordered Geobreeders (and Trigun vol.4, but that isn't here yet).  I'm really glad I got this movie tonight too, I'd just got home from school at about 7:10 PM and was pretty pissed off because I'd just given the worst speech of my illustrious speech-giving career, then was forced to sit through over 2 and a half hours of more crappy speeches.  Add that to sitting in school, being bored off my ass for about 5 hours before that and you can imagine that I wasn't a happy camper.  Anyway, Geobreeders was just the thing to give me a kick in the ass and make me be not pissed off.

Following the trend of most anime that has been converted from manga form (excluding Trigun), if you haven't seen the comic, you probably won't know what the hell is going on.  Yep, not a whole lot of plot runnin' around here, and not a whole lot of explanations right away either.  Basic deal is that the good guys are running an agency that combats phantom cats, who are made of evil juice.  So, the main character's pet phantom cat gets kidnapped by someone and he has to hire his co-workers to help him get her back.  When Geobreeders ends, you can plainly see that they left it wide open for more wacky action, but they may have just done that for the sake of the manga, which was probably still being produced at the time, hell, it might still be in production, I dunno.

Anyway, Geobreeders is a whole bunch of silliness with guns, floppy boobies and really cool 'splosions.  It's like they decided to just make up for the lack of real plot by putting in really neat action scenes all the time, that's okay with me, I almost needed a break from all that anime that made me think about what was going on (just got done watching Tenchi in Tokyo, the uncut version).  One of the things that makes this anime so damn cool is the detail put into it.  All the guns are extremely detailed, the vehicles actually look like real vehicles and all the equipment looks real.  This, coupled with very good animation and artistry, makes for a happy viewing experience.

So, we got forking cool action scenes with lots of 'splosions and stuff, kick ass weapons, really good animation, a sound track that had me groovin' at times
(forgot to mention that, but now that I did, I have to say that for some reason, I really like the end theme a lot!)
and a bunch of silliness.  Hmm since I don't consider the lack of a real plot to be a bad thing (that's because you can tell that they didn't try to put one in), you may be wondering why it didn't get a higher rating.  Well, there is that the weapon sound effects were extremely quiet, a big no-no in my book, and that it was a bit confusing at times.  For some reason, I also felt that they should have more action sequences, just because they did such a damn good job with 'em.  Oh yeah, and the crazy super boobs that they liked to have flopping around, if you've read some of my other reviews, you probably already know that I think that that kind of stuff in a 'cartoon' is just unnecessary. It's just my overall feeling about this deal okay?  Anyway, it's good shit, perfect for low brain activity fun.

Genre - action/sci-fi

Animation - the animation and art work both kick ass, then there's the detail put into all the equipment and vehicles... whoo boy!

Sub vs. Dub - only bothered watching the dub

the Good - great action, great animation, lots of guns, didn't need to think very hard, just plain fun (kinda like the fun I had watching Birdy the Mighty)

the Bad - quiet weapons sound effects, a little confusing at times, random boobs (not really random boobs, more like expected boobs) , I don't consider the lack of a plot to be a bad thing

Overall - lots of wacky fun, hey, I wasn't in a very good mood when I started watching it and afterwards... hell, just look at how long of a review I wrote, I usually only write something that long when I'm bitching about how crappy the anime was.  (3 episodes)
