I
ended up buying this anime after selling the 8 volume set of The Slayers (subtitled)
for $41 on E-Bay (I've been using E-Bay
a whole shitload more than I ever thought possible, I even just bought a
chromium Trigun promo card from some guy). Since I made a cool $21
bucks on the whole deal, I decided it was just about time to get some more
anime, so, with my newly acquired wealth, I looked around for something good to
watch. Sooner than later, I decided on Haunted Junction, mostly because it
wasn't widely known and those who had seen it spoke highly of it. Now it's
my turn to tell you all about this silly little show.
Haunted
Junction is about three high school kids who are in the Holy Student Council of
Saito High. What they do is try and keep the spiritual forces that run
wild in their school in check. There's not much of a plot to this one,
just a girl who has a fetish for boys under 12, a boy who is a complete horn dog
and another boy who just wants to lead a normal life that run around trying to
keep out of control ghosts under control. The good thing about this show
is that they don't try and make it seem like there's supposed to be a plot, it's
just a whole bunch of silliness involving the three members of the council and 7
main character type spirits that inhabit the school.
Aww
man, this show is forking hilarious... in my opinion, it is much funnier than
say.... The Slayers, but that might just be because it's really fucked up humor.
They also make fun of other anime series a lot, one of the main character type
spirits is the Red Mantle, he's an obvious imitation of Tuxedo Mask/Moonlight
Knight/Prancing Hat from Sailor Moon, only this guy is cool.
The
animation and artwork are both above par for a TV series, which made Haunted
Junction very easy to watch without my eyeballs melting. The thing that
was really odd about this show was the musses (I tried to type music...). Some of it is standard music
that's alright for a TV series, the rest of it sounds like it was made for a
Nintendo game the kind of stuff I might be able to imitate with my Hot Keyz.
Fortunately, even the goofy video game music fit this show well enough that it's
not something you can really complain about.
Oh
yeah, for all of you people out there who live and die by whether or not an
anime is either subtitled or dubbed, Haunted Junction only comes subtitled (it
can be switched on or off if you just want to listen to people speak Japanese).
But seriously people, that shouldn't matter, don't not get a really good anime
just because it's only subtitled, after you get used to it, you don't even
realize you're reading the text. But hey, don't peg me as someone who
supports only subtitled things right away, I could personally give a shit, the
only time I usually switch the subtitles on are when the dubbing is just that
bad (Venus Wars, Slayers the Motion
Picture). Of course, I probably just got used to reading subtitles
from back when I watched all of DBZ and DBGT subtitled I got really good at it
since, if you look at the picture of Piccolo in my DBZ review, you'll see what
the best picture I got was just imagine that picture twice as bad and you'll
know how hard it was to read the subtitling... ugg.
Genre
- action/comedy
Animation
- better than average for a TV series
Sub
vs. Dub - it's
only subbed, and it's great!
the
Good - good action, extremely
funny, interesting characters, they managed to make a very simple plot very
interesting
the
Bad - hmm... it's nice to have a
choice of subtitles or dubbing on a DVD... but I think they wouldn't have been
able to get the dubbing right anyway, I didn't like Bones Suzuki or Haruo Sato
very much...
Overall
- a whole shitload better than what I
was expecting... this show may not appeal to everyone since the humor is more of
a type suited to those with a brain disorder, but if you like the kind of stuff
I have on this site, chances are that you'll be laughing your ass off (12
episodes)
