Macross Plus

Well, it looks like those crazies over at Robert's Anime Corner Store finally got their collective asses together and sent me my Macross Plus vol.2 DVD, about 2 ½ weeks later than they should have, so I am now able to write a review, my first in quite a while.  Okay, first of all, let me just say this, 'THIS', okay, on to the review!

M.P. is about two guys who are competing against each other as opposing sides in a research thing umm I can't think right now, let me try again.  Two guys are against each other as they test fly different fighters in an attempt to win funding to produce that fighter for the military.  Anyway, a woman from their past surfaces while these two are trying to kill each other and crazy computer stuff starts happening with wacky mecha action all over the place.  Okay, it's one of those things that really kicks ass.

First off, let me say that the animation in this OVA (I don't know if it's an OVA or OAV, and I don't care, OVA is easier to say damnit!) is some of the best I've ever seen, if not the best.  I read somewhere that this anime had one of the highest production costs ever for an animated film, and it shows.  Unlike say Blue Submarine No.6, the people who made M.P. actually did a good job combining computer animation with Japanese animation, it's to the point where it's hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, extremely fluid.

The music is something that confused me to some degree, you see, I don't really like the kind of techno whatever music that M.P. offered me, but for some reason, I enjoyed this music.  Don't start jumping to crazy conclusions now!  I'm not gonna go out and buy the soundtrack like I did with Trigun or am considering with Cowboy Bebop, I just liked it 'kay?  It might have something to do with the fact that the woman who sang during most of the songs has quite the lovely voice, and since I found out that I like that type of thing (same reason I can listen to Jewel right after enjoying such bands as Pantera, C.o.C., White Zombie and the such), I'll assume that's the reason.  That and the kickin' beat.

Hmm what else oh yeah, before I forget, for any of you uneducated Canadian/American people out there, Macross is the same as Robotech, they just changed the name to Robotech when they brought it overseas (oops, slipped into arrogant Japanese mode for a second there).  So, you may be wondering how much action type stuff is actually jammed into these deals, well less than half.  Don't start pooping in your pants now, action isn't the only thing M.P. does well.  The non-action consists of drama type stuff that is done so well that even I, uneducated retard that I am, was drawn in like a wood tick is attracted to soft, teenage flesh

On to the action!  It was fucking insane my friend!  You have to see it to know what I'm talking about, especially in Part 4, AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!  Umm, yeah.  Shit, I forgot to say that the story was good.

Genre - action/drama/adventure

Animation - Close to the best I've ever seen, if not the best, they do a wonderful job of combining computer animation with the regular animation

Sub vs. Dub - the dub was pretty good, and I now wish I'd watched the sub

the Good - they managed to draw you away from the action and make you interested in the people, the action kicked all ass, the music, the animation, the characters had the same type of look as the characters in most fighting animes, which I like, but in this case, they were done well

the Bad - not quite enough action to satiate my crazy rages... or something, the vehicles in M.P. symbolize everything I detest about new and future cars (damn bubble shit, I HATE THAT!)

Overall - Extremely good, in fact, it wasn't far from getting a Magically Delicious (eh hem… this was changed) rating.
