I feel like
keeping this review short, since I plan on writing two others right after.
Patlabor 1 takes place in Tokyo during the year 1999 (the future).
A man who designed the new operating systems that are currently being
installed in most labors has just committed suicide, and there are now labors
going wild and destroying crap. The
Mobile Police get on the job to figure out what the hell is going on and how to
stop it.
When I have
nothing to do and want to relax for a bit (and not go running) I pop this thing
in the DVD player and just enjoy the show.
The animation/artwork is that nice old style that I like so much and very
well done, especially considering the movie’s age.
The music is good (I’m not gonna screw around trying to comment on the
damn music in the anime anymore unless it makes me shit my pants). While the movie is not short on action, which is
realistically handled (considering we’re talking about giant robots running
around here…), the movie concentrates more on the actual story than just
having a bunch of robots clubbing the crap out of each other.
Bottom line, a very good movie that is realistic (considering),
entertaining, interesting, soothing, shower fresh, has good action and is
unpredictable enough that you probably won’t be able to just figure out
what’s going to happen right away.
Genre
- action/sci fi/mystery/mecha
Animation
- great animation and artwork that
helped set the mood.
Sub
vs. Dub - I think
the Sub is better
the
Good - very interesting story, good action, well paced, keeps you
guessing a bit, eating a pizza with forks and knives (even though I do that
sometimes), 'realistic'
the
Bad - In my useless opinion, a
bit more mecha action couldn't have hurt, there may be more stuff up there that
I mentioned and can't remember
Overall
- very good show
