Petshop of Horrors

Hmm... when Josh and I saw this anime in the Family Movies (private joke that's not really funny), we thought that it was one of those super double gory sex type anime deals, and therefore, didn't rent it.  But, a few days ago, in a fit of mad boredom, I went to the movie place to see if they had Vampire Hunter D in
(from what I remember it sucks, but I wanted to refresh my memory)
and also, possibly, rent Pokemon to review.  As I wandered the movie land, trying to find any anime at all, and also trying to avoid the temptation to finally rent Chinese Hercules, I finally found Pokemon and determined that Vampire Hunter D was gone.  Fortunately for me, sitting next to Pokemon was Petshop of Horrors.  I had actually wanted to rent this a little while ago but I couldn't find it.  So I grabbed the two tapes and dished out $2 to the guy at the counter and went home to watch The Thing.  Afterwards, since I didn't want to go to bed and I was bored, I decided to stay up 'til past 1:00 AM watching what I thought would be utter crap.  And so, we come to end of my meaningless rambling and get to the review.

Petshop of Horrors is about a Petshop in Chinatown that's run by this fruitcake who sells rare and exotic pets to losers.  If these losers don't follow the directions on how to care for their new acquisitions, they kinda die.  The other main character in this show is our friend the cop, who is trying to get to the bottom of all these strange murders and finds that they all lead him back to this same petshop.  The freaked out wackiness ensues.

I'll start out with the animation, since that is the first thing you will see (heh heh, get it?).  This is the only anime I have seen (not including Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, since that's not anime) that I think is actually better for not having wonderful animation.  It consists of mostly still frames and not so much actual motion of animation.  This works so well, in my opinion, because it give you the chance to actually pay better attention to the story and concentrate on what's going on.  Plus, the artwork is also very nice, which helps out.

You may be wondering if this is a horror anime, as the name implies.  I found that the only thing that freaked me out was the first episode, after that it was pretty tame in the scary factor and there were actually a few parts where I was prompted to laugh out loud (none of that LoL bullshit around here pal!  Those stupid AOL fuckers can take their stupid fucking secret language and shove it straight up their fat asses!).  I can't really remember the music (as usual) aside from that it helped to set the mood.  The whole thing kept me very interested and also made me think a bit, I really liked the "bad guy's" closing line to the cop in the last episode, I was all like,"Awww yeah bitch, bring it on!" or something.

Genre - horror (I guess...)

Animation - bad animation coupled with good artwork that worked quite well

Sub vs Dub - only saw it dubbed

the Good - quite interesting, funny at times, not what I expected at all (I expected a bloody demon grope fest) (heh heh, I read that and thought of a bloody demon GRAPE fest)

the Bad - not much rewatchability (in my opinion), I didn't like the fish episode, the woman cop's skirt is ridiculously short (this is good and bad, since it's funny and sad at the same time)

Overall - surprisingly good stuff  (4 episodes)
