Project A-ko

Buying Project A-ko was the result of my need to spend money at GenCon 2000.  Sure, I’d spent a bit already, but I’d given myself $300 to play with and I by the time I got home I hadn’t spent more than $120.  Anyway, there was surprisingly little good anime stuff at GenCon, and I spent my time running around like an idiot trying to find good DVD’s.  I finally settled on Project A-ko because most of the anime stuff was either way overpriced or on VHS.  I’ll just have to hope they have better stuff when my posse and I head down again next year.

Anyway, to fully understand the story of Project A-ko, you have to watch all three or four movies in the series, of which I’ve only seen two.  In this one, the first one, A-ko mainly tries to get to school on time while B-ko tries to kill her with big robots so she can have C-ko as her friend.  While this is going on, aliens are closing in to capture C-ko, who is their long lost princess and the world is trying to defend itself from them.

As I said before, to understand the story fully, watch all the movies.  Even though the animation and drawing  is very well done, I have to add that, for those of you like me who like that sort of thing, the older style animation adds to the movie quite a bit.  The sound is well done, but the music is a bit too… not good…? at times.

While the first half of the show has you somewhat interested, even though you may start wondering if the three girls are just a bunch of lesbians who happen to be a bit abnormal, the real claim to fame to the movie comes during the mecha battles and, more generally, the second half of the movie.  During the second half, the action doesn’t stop, and we’re treated (now I really sound like an idiot) to a whole crapload of some of the oddest fighting you can find most action packed scenes you can find in an anime.

The show is also parodies other anime genres and specific shows, even though I wasn’t able to pick up on a lot of them because I’m more into the anime that’s been released after Project A-ko.

Genre - action/sci-fi/parody/drama/comedy/more?

Animation - Aside from the fact that the animation is excellent and the artwork is very nice, I just really like the old style animation, like this one, Dominion Tank Police and so on.

Sub vs. Dub - the sub is noticeably better

the Good - bad ass fight scenes, lots of fight scenes, funny at points, gave me something to buy

the Bad - C-ko, sometimes the show is a bit too stupid for its own good, the first half of the movie wasn't very wonderful

Overall - It's a good view, especially if you plan on watching all of the movies
