There's
a very uninteresting story behind the purchase of this movie. I was taking
a poop when my dad convinced me to go to Best Buy and look around. Seeing
as I had lots of homework to do and it was due the next day, I went along.
When we got there, I tricked myself into believing that the whole trip would be
a big fat waste if I didn't get something, so I ran over to the DVD area like a
schoolgirl hopped up on goofballs. Seeing as how Ninja Cadets wasn't there
anymore and everything else was either bad or part of a long series, I started
to cry. Suddenly, a little girl came over and tugged on my sleeve.
She then pointed up at a DVD case that was put on the shelf so that you couldn't
see the title. With a sense of wonder, I slowly pulled out the case and we
both gazed at the cover, it was Slayers: The Motion Picture.
Hmmm
I thought to myself as the little girl grasped at the DVD, I remember reading a
review from Lord Carnage that placed this movie slightly higher on the goodness
scale then the 1st season of The Slayers, which I owned on DVD. Suddenly,
the little munchkin managed to get a grip on the case and began to whine at me
to let go so she could have it, saying that her big sister hid it there and had
gone to the latrine (heh heh) to
powder her nose. This little cutie pie was supposed to make sure no-one
took the DVD.
I
was suddenly overcome with rage and gave the little girl a swift kick to the
face, rendering her unconscious. A gasp sounded behind me I whirled around
and was confronted with the little girl's older sister, a voluptuous 18 year old
with skin-tight jean shorts and no shirt! She then rushed to me and began
to grope me in ways that I cannot describe!
Oh
wait no well, the part where I went to Best Buy and ended up with Slayers: The
Motion Picture is true, that is, unless you have no trouble imagining me being
groped by large breasted 18 year olds, either way works for me. Anyway,
now I suppose I should start the review.
I'm
pretty sure this movie takes place after the OVA's, unfortunately, having not
seen them, I don't really know if the OVA's take place before or after the TV
series. I'm thinking before. Okay, the basic story to this movie is
that Lina and Nahga go to an island to utilize the hot springs and end up
fighting demons and talking to old men. The story actually is much better
than I make it sound, but since I don't really care about expanding on plot
developments as much as other more serious anime reviewers do, let's just say
that there are a bunch of bad guys that Lina and Nahga get to kill.
The
animation in this movie is extremely good? Everything is animated very,
very smoothly and the drawings are all very detailed also. As with the TV
series, all the spells look forking great. A problem I did have with this
movie is that since everything did look so great, when some of the bad guys
wandered in, looking pretty crappy compared to everything else, it was a bit of
a let down. That's another thing, aside from the fact that some of the bad
guys didn't look too great, in my opinion, they could've at least made up for it
by being cooler. I mean, I know that Slayers is a comedy type show, but
when one of the bad guy's powers is to make you think you're back in your
homeland... ugg.... I just wish there'd been more epic type magic battles,
instead of Lina or Nahga disposing of the current bad guy with just one or two
spells.
While
Slayers was quite entertaining, it wasn't as fun to watch as the TV series (in
my opinion). I think this is partly because all we had for
characters was Lina and Nahga, while in the TV series they had a whole bunch of
people who kicked ass. So, if you don't particularly like Lina or Nahga,
well you're shit outta luck pal (I was
kinda SOL myself, while I do like Lina, my favorite characters are Zangulus and
Zelgadis).
The
worst thing about this movie for me was the voice actor they got for Lina.
Holy crap, it only took about 15 minutes for me to get thoroughly pissed by just
listening to that voice. Luckily, I can switch it to Japanese Subtitled
and everything is better, everyone even makes more sense and the movie doesn't
seem so corny (the main demon stealing
phrases from Sylvester the Cat). All in all, a good movie.
I'm just sad that I got my hopes up about it because Lord Carnage said it was so
good, oh well.
Oh
yeah, almost forgot, Nahga has really floppy boobs, just in case you were
wondering.
Genre
- adventure/fantasy/comedy
Animation
- The animation was really fucking good,
lots better than in The Slayers (1st season). The overall detail was also
a large step up from The Slayers.
Sub
vs. Dub - sub is definitely
better
the
Good - Great animation, lots of
zany stuff, pretty funny, entertaining characters, good story, they didn't skimp
on the spell effects and didn't pull a ROLW (Record of Lodoss War) on us (only
about three different spells)... I'm fairly positive there's other stuff too
the
Bad - Lina's voice (dubbed),
disappointing bad guys, not-so-great battles, sometimes it got somewhat corny
Overall
- A good movie, but not as much fun to
watch as The Slayers, which had better battles, more characters and a better
plot (I realize when I'm saying this that Slayer: The Motion Picture is a stand
alone movie that's about 75 mins long while The Slayers is about 600 mins long).
Well worth watching.
