Hmm...
what can I say, this movie sure as hell surprised me. The main reason I
bought it was because I'd read that it was as good as Tenchi Muyo and, well, I
think Tenchi Muyo kicks ass. What I expected wasn't exactly what I got,
but that is not a bad thing. I expected this movie to contain a lot more
jokes and general monkeying around, kinda like Tenchi Muyo, but this deal is
more of an actual serious movie. While there are some jokes scattered
around here and there, Tenchi Muyo in Love is... it's kinda like some
other type of stand-alone anime movie, you could watch this without having any
background on Tenchi Muyo and still love the damn thing.
The
general story is this, some bad guy named Kain has escaped the Galaxy Police and
traveled back in time to fuck with the past. He does this because the
Jurai royal family originally helped to capture him and he wants revenge, so he
goes to try and kill off Tenchi's mother and therefore erase any Jurai related
type people in the present (now that I think about it, he'd also have to kill
off everybody on Jurai, but oh well). This causes Tenchi to begin to...
not be there. So, everybody hops back in time with the help of Washu to
try and prevent anything happening to Tenchi's mother.
The
whole movie is executed so well that it's quite amazing. At times I could
forget that I'm watching anime and just get lost in the wonderful world of
lollipops and creamed corn that is excellent directing. The music, great
'acting', beautiful animation and great story gave this movie a kick in the ass
that boosted it up into my excellent category.
I
mentioned before that T.M. in L. had less comedy and wasn't quite the same as
Tenchi Muyo, this doesn't mean that it has no comedy. Actually, maybe it
wasn't that there was less, but it was just done in a way that was more
believable and therefore less noticeable... I don't know, I've just been
watching anime for about eight hours straight and apparently want to sound like
I know what I'm talking about. Bottom line, there is less childishness
running about in this movie than in Tenchi Muyo.
Genre
- action/drama/comedy
Animation
- Overall, the animation is at least as good as in Tenchi Muyo, which is fucking
great! The only deviation is in the fight scenes where the animation goes
from fucking great to holy shit! I just crapped my pants because that looked so
fucking cool!
Sub
vs. Dub - sub is better
the
Good - Extremely great animation, super duper action, good drama (if you
like that), great characters, that one Galaxy Police special operative... pretty
much everything. Oh yeah, they managed to pull off having no random boobs.
the
Bad - I thought that Tenchi's little kick-the-bad-guy's-ass outfit looked
a bit stupid, but you only see that at the end.
Overall
- Fucking awesome, at least as good as Tenchi Muyo, but with the ability to be
watched by people who have no idea what Tenchi Muyo is with only a little
confusion.
