Dude...
I just crapped my pants... well, not really, but it was pretty damn close.
RIGHT! On to the review! As you can see above and below, the
pictures are not as large as my usual... large pictures. That's because I
did not have Tenchi Muyo on DVD, I have it on VCD (it looks better small).
This means that the quality isn't as good (although it is pretty damn good) and
the people who produced this set decided that they would do something extra
special with it, let me tell you a story...
Back
when I was looking to buy Tenchi Muyo, all I could find was the box set that had
all of Tenchi Muyo, all of Tenchi Universe and I think it might also include
Tenchi in Tokyo (that is what I thought at the time, I now know that it only had
Tenchi Muyo). This was all for about $90 off of Amazon.com, which was
about $30 off the normal price. Because I didn't want to spend so much on
an anime that I didn't really know if it was good or not, I found the VCD
version of Tenchi Muyo for $34.
Now,
when I bought this, I was under the impression that it was in English, as it
was, but I had no idea just how much in English it really was. Not only
was it dubbed in English, but it was also subtitled. This wouldn't be a
problem if it were DVD, but VCD is just a bunch of really good MPEG's, meaning I
got what I got. Not only that, but the subtitles weren't even done well,
they didn't match up with what people were saying when they were saying it.
I can see what happened in my mind's eye...
1st
Japanese guy - "Okay, we have Tenchi Muyo for sending to Americans."
2nd
Japanese guy - "Right, we send them Tenchi Muyo in box set so stupid
Americans must spend many dollars, ha ha ha."
1st
- "Yes, but we not send Tenchi Muyo separately on DVD, stupid Americans
must buy in crappier VCD, ha ha ha"
2nd
- "Ha ha"
2nd
- "....."
1st
- "I have idea! Not only we send Tenchi Muyo on VCD, but we send it
dubbed in English and subbed in English because stupid fucking Americans need to
learn how to read"
2nd
- "Yes"
1st
- "..."
2nd
- "If we must teach stupid Americans to read, we must test them by not
putting subtitles in sync with the speech, good test for stupid cow
Americans!"
1st
- "Yes..... ha ha ha ha!"
2nd
- "Ha ha ha"
1st
- "Ha"
I know it must've gone something like
that.
Tenchi
Muyo is about a guy named Tenchi Masaki who is quite normal, the wackiness
begins when he lets a demon out of imprisonment and that demon happens to be in
love with him (some people who've seen this may say that Ryoko, the demon, fell
in love with him after he set her free or whatever, but she was actually in love
with him before). Because Ryoko is now free, people who are after Ryoko
start coming to Earth to capture her, all of these people happen to be pretty
young girls, and they fall in love with Tenchi (sounds like my situation,
exactly like it). The craziness begins.
I
really, really, really like this anime, not only does it have awesome
characters, but it has great animation and is extremely funny and entertaining.
We got Ryoko, who just plain kicks ass, Mihoshi, who is like a grown-up Bubbles
(Powerpuff Girls), Sasami, who is almost as cool as Ryoko, and everyone else who
are cool in their own special way (especially Sasami's mom). Although this
is kind of a romance, it also has quite a bit of action and is... it's... it's
fucking great!
Genre
- action/sci-fi/romance/comedy
Animation
- If I think really hard, the only
animation I've seen that's better than this is from Ninja Scroll and Akira (not
anymore, by a long shot). The animation is very detailed and smooth, it
goes down your throat like giant, non-stick pan... or something.
Sub
vs. Dub - the sub
is, by far, better. it's also very, very dirty at points
the
Good - Ryoko, Mihoshi and
everything else. Ryoko and Mihoshi are special though. Everyone
actually changes clothes.
the
Bad - It's too damn short, and
I've seen some of Tenchi Universe, I don't accept that as a reasonable
substitute (Tenchi Universe is the TV version of Tenchi Muyo and has something
like... 5500 episodes or something, it's not as good in all categories)
Overall
- Fucking awesome, it puts together
bunches of genre types and actually does an excellent job. (13 episodes)
I
recently bought the DVD box set and, let me tell you, it's worth the extra
money, plus a pretzel...
