Trigun

Okay, right below this review is the review I wrote before watching the complete series.  I decided to change the review to make it more accurate, since I had written the majority of the original around the time I'd seen the 13th episode.

First of all, Trigun is now only ranked as excellent instead of magically delicious because it no longer deserves that distinction while it did near the beginning.

I won't tell you the complete story behind Trigun because that would ruin it, but I will say that there is a Vash being followed by a Milly and a Meryl who are trying to prevent him from causing damage that would then cause the insurance company that the two women work at to pay for the damages.  Also pursuing Vash is a host of people trying to collect on the money put out on his head for being such a dangerous type person.

The animation in Trigun is at once great and bad.  In the first few episodes, the animation is wonderful, it has crisply drawn lines, detailed characters, bright colors, smooth movement of the characters and everything else in general and is just plain good stuff.  As the show progresses, the animation keeps on a downward slide.  The colors aren't as bright, the use of "sliding" animation becomes much more common, the characters become less detailed and the lines aren't as crisp.  All around, the animation just declines in a way that is quite noticeable.

The sound track is great and well worth the purchase of the cd.  Now lets get to the Story and try not to give anything away.  The story is the reason I reduced the rating and I must say that I don't think it's the actual fault of the people who made Trigun that I don't like the show toward the end as much as I did toward the beginning.  The reason I don't blame these people is because Trigun is pretty much a direct copy from the original Trigun manga to an animated series and many of the things that would work in a comic book don't work too well in an anime.  In the beginning of the show, everything that ash did was a mystery and left you wondering how the hell he just did that and the story focused mainly on showing you that Vash wasn't normal and introducing characters.  In the opinion of the people I know and myself, the show was far more enjoyable at that time then later on when you knew exactly how Vash could do everything and all he did was fight improbable bad guys... it just wasn't as much fun anymore, even if they had kept up the animation quality.

That is why the rating was changed, decline in animation quality (which really isn't a big deal) and the change (in our opinion) that the story of the show took in the direction of bad.  Other than that, it had wonderful characters, aside from some of the bad guys, great music and a good plot.  If any of you get the chance to watch this, do it!

If you're reading this for the first time, you may not know that this is the second review of Trigun I've written.  I felt that it was necessary to re-write the review because, after seeing more episodes, I thought that Trigun needed both more of an explanation and a higher rating.  Now, don't start going crazy about me changing my original rating, the only reason I'm doing it here is because I haven't seen the complete series and, therefore, ratings are subject to change.  Anyway, after seeing episodes 11-13, I decided that Trigun deserved to get a higher rating, as well a bill for my underwear since I crapped my pants at how good this anime was getting!

Trigun is about a man named Vash the Stampede who is a wanted criminal with a price of $$60,000,000,000 on his head.  He wanders the land, trying to help people and put his past behind him.  Anyway, tagging along with Vash are two insurance representatives named Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe who were sent to first find Vash, and then try to keep him from causing any more damage.

I have noticed that almost all of the other people who have reviewed Trigun have seen only the first four episodes.  This is a problem since they then don't understand what Trigun really is.  If you watch the first four episodes, you get the general impression that Trigun is just an action comedy about a guy who is either very good or very lucky and is followed by two women all over the place.  You could also get the impression that it is very episodic, with a new bad guy every show and very little continuity among the episodes.  Overall, you would probably think that there is actually very little story lurking around in all of the crazy gun fighting action.  That's too bad.

I am actually amazed at the depth of the story and how it is presented.  Sure, when I started watching this, I was pretty sure there wouldn't be much story too, but as I watched more, I could see a very interesting and well thought out plot come through.  Well, I think you'd have to see Trigun to at least the 12th episode to see what I'm talking about, so I won't bother trying to convince you.  Now, in case you don't know what Trigun has to offer, let me give you a quick little run through of what you'll see if you ever see Trigun: guns, comedy, action, guns, smooth moves, guns, Vash trying to pick up chicks, moral dilemmas, guns, mystery, great characters and much more!  Yeah, lots of guns, this is actually what makes the characters more interesting.  Most of the characters, while they are already interesting, have their own type of weapon, for example, the first bad guy has a giant boomerang that cuts through stuff, the second has a rotating lever action rifle, Vash has his pistol, Milly has her 'stun gun' and so on.  While you might think that it's kinda silly to have such strange weapons all over the place, I think it just adds to what Trigun is, great.

Genre - action/comedy/western

Animation - The animation is pretty good, and if you're looking at it from the standpoint of Trigun being a TV series, then the animation is definitely very good!  Just watch the bar scene in the first episode.  Trigun has its animation ups and downs, but it never gets bad enough that it'll distract from the show... it seems that the farther the series gets, the worse the animation gets.

Sub vs. Dub - the sub screws me up, I much prefer the dub

the Good - Let's see now... Vash, Milly, Meryl, Wolfwood, the really cool bad guys (mostly in the later episodes), the cool guns, the music, the story, etc, etc...  It is all good.

the Bad - The only bad thing so far (and I personally don't mind it except for having to listen to my friend complain about it) is that Vash is often called the Humanoid Typhoon, OH NO!  IT'S GOT AN OID!  GOD SAVE US ALL!

Overall - Very good shit, watch it now and if you think Trigun is a copy of Cowboy Bebop like some people I know do, then write me and I'll show you that the only thing they have in common is that they both have guns.  (26 episodes)
